There are great sandwiches and sad sandwiches. There is no reason for anyone to ever eat a sad sandwich! You know, that turkey and cheese on bread or even pepperoni on a leftover hamburger bun after the weekend party – those would be classified as sad sandwiches. Either way, it’s not pleasing to the eyes or the taste buds.
Fortunately, there is a super easy way to fix your sandwich. The number one way to turn a sad sandwich into a desired lunch is lettuce…but not just any lettuce, Greenswell Growers lettuce. Let’s discuss.
First, what makes a sandwich a sandwich? PBJ aside, most would agree you need some sort of bread along with meat and cheese for it to be considered a sandwich. Meat and cheese are pretty much a given, and they offer the protein and dairy needed for it to be a respectable sandwich. Bread can be interchanged. There’s classic sliced bread, tortillas, naan, pita, bagels, rolls, English muffins, buns…mixing up the carrier can be a way to freshen up the sandwich, albeit bread is still bread.
From there, you have toppings. Tomato, lettuce, possibly some sort of onion, pickle or hot pepper, as well as a sauce like mayo, mustard, aioli, oil and vinegar all make lovely additions to sandwiches. When you have the time to make and eat it immediately, load it up and enjoy! However, when you’re short on time or packing it to go, several of these toppings become a nuisance. Let’s break it down more!

Tomatoes are a beloved sandwich topping, but there’s the hassle of washing and slicing them. That’s time we don’t always have when preparing our sandwiches.
Sauces make the world of difference in enhancing the flavor of a sandwich. But with sauces comes the very real issue of soggy bread. Who likes soggy, wet sandwiches?
Pickles are delicious, but unless you take the time to pat dry your pickle before putting it on your sandwich, you have meat and cheese on pickle-soaked bread. Same goes for hot peppers, sadly. Not ideal.
Onions offer flavor, some texture, and don’t add moisture to the bread, win win win! Ah, but then you remember that onions grow more potent over time and will leave you — and your area — often smelling like onions.

That takes us to LETTUCE. Now here is why lettuce, Greenswell Growers in particular, makes the best sandwich topping. First, it requires no prep, just open the seal and put it on your sandwich. Next, it visually enhances the experience and since people eat with their eyes first, this is a win.
It offers great crunch, almost like when you used to put potato chips in your sandwich when you were a kid, just this time you’re an adult and it’s healthy. Which leads me to the fact that it adds fiber and nutrients to your sandwich! Finally, because it doesn’t need to be washed, there are no concerns of making your sandwich soggy and it can actually protect your bread if you want to add sauce between your lettuce and meat. Does it get any better than that? We don’t think so.
Here is an example of one lovely sandwich we made that was being enjoyed right away – hence loading it with all the ingredients! The BLT has known all along that lettuce is essential in sandwiches, it’s right in the name! Greenswell Growers Tender Butter Blend is the BEST lettuce for the sandwich. It’s tender and naturally slightly sweet texture and flavor pairs perfectly with the salty bacon and bright tomatoes. We also decided to add garlic aioli (fresh grated garlic and lemon juice in mayo) to add a pop of flavor and creaminess on the toasted bread. Delicious!
All of that being said, if you’re enjoying your sandwich at home, on the go, or hours later, fresh, no need to wash, crispy, crunchy, Greenswell Growers lettuce makes every sandwich better!
